tie one on apron – plaid?

July 31, 2009

My apron for Tie One On – Plaid is barely plaid, in fact it is a check and even that is hiding. I made this for my grandma who is in a nursing home and has some trouble eating without spilling her food so after a meal she needs to change before she can set off to her next activity. Hopefully this will help, although I am sure it will too big for her, she is so tiny. I will make her a few more a bit smaller. As with my last tie one on apron this smock style apron was made from an old sheet – love them! The pocket reminds me of those cute ruffled pants babies wear over their nappies. They probably have a name but there is 6 years between me and a nappy so I forget what it is.

Check out my dog Charlie, she sits by this bush and waits for bees, she has been doing this for about eight years and she has never caught a bee yet, that I know of. What a life!

wee bag (as in little bag, not bag for wee)

July 28, 2009

Recently I think some neighbourhood ratbags took some stuff from my unlocked car in my driveway. Sadly they took Henry’s school bag, my old wee bag used for errand running, library, shopping etc, and they also took all my CD’s. I have made a new wee bag from bits and pieces left over from the blankets. Just a quicky, it’s pretty cute but I am still having issues with my photo’s lately, where is the light? This fabric especially is being ripped off because it’s stunning in person, so pretty! It’s Anna Maria Horner from her Gook Folks range. Lovely.

booko

July 28, 2009

I am sick in bed, and have just been wandering around the internet most of the day. Fascinating! My point is I came across a very cool site called booko. Now, I LOVE books, especially books about food and I buy a lot online. Booko has kindly saved me hours, maybe even days by finding  the cheapest place to buy books & DVDs in Australia. Just type in the book you want and booko will come up with a list in order from cheapest to most expensive, in Australian dollars! Click  on the one you want and buy direct from the book seller. The site is great, so simple and clean and easy to use. I know I am raving…maybe I have a fever but I get so excited when I see someone doing such a great job! Also check out booko’s blog, blogo…too cute.

blueberry lemon buckle and other stuff

July 26, 2009

I made this gorgeous Blueberry Lemon Buckle the other night, you can find the recipe here. It was so good and the aroma from the oven that filled the house was amazing! So yummy. It calls for buttermilk which I didn’t have so I used sour cream instead and it turned out fine. I also used canned blueberries (fresh are too expensive unless in season which is summer) but it would work with frozen also. By the way ‘buckle’  ”is an old American term for a simple, single-layer cake made with blueberries or other berries.” (Food Lovers Companion) The cake is topped with a crumble mixture and then a tart lemon glaze.

Not so good food experience, we went to Splendour in the Grass yesterday and all feeling a little queezy after some questionable food on sticks…mmmm. Anyway saw a cool band called Bridezillas, worth a look.

I’m reading Outliers at the moment, really facinating stuff by Malcolm Gladwell who also wrote Blink and Tipping Point, both also good.

School holidays have taken there toll evidenced by the sparsity of blog posts but we will be back on track next week!

why?

July 13, 2009

Why would I see how many pikelets I can stack? I don’t know but the answer is 14…keep in mind these are thick, have a small surface area and are motley in size and shape…

IMG_8395

I have searched but can’t find a record for a pikelet stack, probably because I’m not sure how many people make pikelets outside Australia and New Zealand (and probbably the UK), or it could be that no-one really cares about pikelet stacks which is fair enough. However, pancake stacks (pikelets older and bossier big  brother) are big news…

Sean McGinlay and Natalie King of Glasgows Hilton Grosvenor hotel made this pancake stack containing 672 pancakes and measuring 75cm and that’s the world record, apparently. Next time you are making pikelets please have a go at a stack and let me know how you go!

my beautiful stamp and other stuff

July 11, 2009

Recently I had a custom stamp made by Karuna from outoftheblues. It turned out absolutely gorgeous, Karuna really has an amazing talent for carving out the smallest details and she is such a nice person. he actual picture is one that I drew myself a while ago. I know this won’t be my last stamp from Karuna!

I plan to make some cards with this one, I’ll post when they are done. Also I will be having another give away and will post about that too. Why am I telling you what I will do instead of just doing it? Mmmm…I do have good intentions, I do get it all done, eventually. Dearest Del won the last giveaway, go Del! And here is what she won, chair not included…

quiltet (def. quilty-blanket)

July 9, 2009

Newest addition to my baby blanket bonanza. This one I’m calling a quiltet, it’s a quilty-blanket or blankety-quilt..

Quiltet---Flowers-and-LeaveThe top is like a quilt however I have backed it with a fleece rather than using batting and a quilt back. It makes a nice soft blanket rather than the firm feel of a qulit if you know what I mean. I’m happy with it, it was fun to make so I will be doing some more of these.

By the way I have added more to my total for my WFW sponsorship, I’m up to $212.00!!!

baby girl

July 2, 2009

We are planing a big trip for this September/October, 6 weeks in the US, husband Rick is from the US. Anyway I have been packing up some bits and pieces because we are having a house sitter come in so anyway I was in Mia’s room and came across some old books, the first was my favourite when I was little and the second was hers, as I put them on the bed, next to each other, on her baby quilt that her Dad lovingly handstitched for her I just burst into tears, my baby turns 15 this year…it just hit me, I saw all that time, my childhood, her childhood, my motherhood, her birth, her future right there on the bed.

What I love about her book, Meg and Mog, is how worn it is, very very well read and loved! And here’s a photo of where we are at the moment…

BUT, look who is still on her bed…

IMG_7915

This is “Brownie”. I remember when I was about Mia’s age I threw my childhood doll away, her name was Suzie, she was kind of ugly with short spikey hair and she made a gutterall cry when you turned her upside down but I wish I still had her around, so I won’t let Mia throw Brownie away, I’m just relieved he’s still on the bed! Having said that, having a teenager is not unlke having a baby again, they change and grow so quickly, they can be moody and throw tantrums, they sometimes want to do things they’re not quite big enough to do yet and for parents it’s an exhausting but amazing, beautiful time. Eventually, we have to let go…

Has anyone else kept books from childhood I would love to photo’s, it would be so cool to get a whole bunch of photo’s of childhood books together!
