How Do I Become An Independent Insurance Broker?

July 16, 2010 - 10:40 pm 4 Comments

I have my certificates in Property & Casualty and Life and Health and also completed classes in Series 6 & 63. Once I get my license can I just sell the insurance carrier’s product lines without joining an insurance company?

Write a exam for it

You will have to be appointed to each company that you wish to sell insurance for.

You have to find a company willing to let you sell their P&C insurance, but you can do it without being their employee. For life in OH, though, you can’t even get your license without having a sponsor company – someone who says you can sell their insurance, but then you’re affiliated with them.

You will generally want to associate with a Brokerage General Agency or Independent Marketing Organization on the fixed life and health side. You can only have one Broker/Dealer that oversees your variable business. Most companies appoint a broker on the fixed and variable side independently of each other.
