Car insurance reform!?!? Why can’t Nancy Reid and Harry Pelosi stop insurance companies from ripping us off?

Why can’t I add collision coverage to my automobile insurance AFTER I get into an accident?

Why do these lousy insurance companies want to run away from me when its time to pay up? Why do they screw with people who might not have had the foresight to include collision coverage because they thought they would be able to avoid accidents?

This is just ridiculous!! I would’ve been willing to pay for collision beforehand, but what if I never got into an accident!?! Then those damn CEOs would just run off with MY money!!! What gives!
Mad Spinach – I agree with you, but isn’t that what Medicaid is for…why does Nancy Pelosi and Harry Reid have to destroy my access to market-driven risk-sharing pools that allow me to pay for my own healthcare with no government-handout!!?? Why! Why does fixing Medicaid require breaking my insurance!?!?! Why!
Don J – you da man!!!

I’m totally hip, Dudette. I’m, like, totally bummed about this heinous situation as well. I’d be copacetic with a blanket insurance that covers me, my family, all my pets and my house(including the hydro-weed in my closet) for free. Let the Man pay for it all. The Establishment should pay; not me. I’m a victim. That’s what former Enron advisor Paul Krugman tells me anyway.

Like health insurance, isn’t automobile insurance in the US a joke?

July 16, 2010 - 7:00 pm 4 Comments

In many states in the US, you can get automobile insurance with coverage of 15K/30K/5K and no state requires more than 50K/100K/25K. If you injure someone and carry the minimum coverage required, it is likely that you will end up filing bankruptcy.

In comparison, the EU currently requires a minimum of 500K/2.5M/500K in Euros and the minimum coverage will double in 2012.

Of course since everyone in Europe is covered by universal health insurance, the auto insurance premiums are usually lower since insurance companies seldom pay for high medical bills.

I don’t know. I’ve never had a problem with either my auto OR my health insurance… Funny how I was reading just this morning on the internet AP how the Beckham (English soccer star) had to go to Finland for surgery. What happened to England’s great socialist health care system?

What type of automobile insurance is required to transport developmentally disabled clients in my own vehicle?

July 16, 2010 - 6:50 pm 3 Comments

I was recently hired to work with a developmentally disabled child for a few hours after school. I may work with another client, too. This might involve transporting this person on various outings in the community in my vehicle. All people who work in this field for various companies in the state of Michigan (home care for the disabled, or with senior citizens) are asked to dirve their clients in their own vehicle. I am told by my reputable auto insurance company that my full coverage insurance DOES NOT cover this whatsoever. I would be required to have what is referred to as commercial insurance, since I am " transporting for hire". How can thousands of employees not know this? Are these home care agencies/companies knowingly taking advantage of their employees by putting them at risk for not bing adequately covered? Everyone is told when hired just show your certificate of automobile insurance, drivers license, registration, etc. Can anyon shed some light on this? I am told that this would make me like a taxi, ant the insurance would be $5,000/ year.

And your insurance was correct. If you take anyone anywhere in your car and are paid for doing it, you need commercial insurance at the very least, and perhaps even a commercial tag on your car.

Thousands of employees do, or should, know this. Home care agencies that hire have a right to see your insurance coverage, and for most you go to the client’s home and do things for them. If you are required, as part of job, to transport them places, you will need commercial coverage.

Which insurance company should be paying for the accident?

A tree fell on my grandpas house during a storm. My dad tried to help him remove the tree and fell off the house through the roof and broke his elbow. (He has been out of work and has a surgery.) They had part of the tree attached to a chain that was attached to a truck. The insurance company is saying that because the truck was involved the claim goes though the automobile insurance; but he fell off the house. The home and car insurance is under the same company, should the case really be though the automobile and not the home?

As a claims rep, I would route this to the homeowners’ insurance, because he was not in, getting into, getting onto, getting out of, or getting off of, the truck. If the chain attached to the truck pulled him off the roof, then I would route it to the truck insurance. Talk to the adjuster and ASK WHY they think it should be the auto insurance that is primary?

that is the name of the insurance the guy told the police and me

That’s not a name of an insurance company. This is precisley why you should always call the police to the scene of an accident.

My boyfriend and I was making a left turn on a green arrow light and a car from the opposite direction hit us while attempting to make a right turn on red. There was no tickets given. We were hit on our front passenger side fender. The person who hit us had a witness and we had a witness. On the police report the investigator listed that we failed to yield while making a left turn on green and they failed to yield while making a right turn on red. What she would we do? We or now out of a vehicle b/c it was wrecked beyond repair and I have medical bills. He stilled was making pymnts on the car so his insurance company is just paying off his car. He also had GAP Insurance. His insurance company offered him 5,337 for 1999 Tahoe, which after fees came to be 4,000 and something is this appropriate? Now the 4,000 is going toward what was owed on the vehicle. Isn’t the other persons insurance company liable? Please help me understand this I just want my life back to normal.
Also, the accident happened in Texas and we live in Louisiana. The other persons insurance company is Farmers.
We had a lawyer in Texas, but they were trying to get us to go to more doctors and everything " I guess trying to milk the cow" but I was not trying to do this. I was not in any pain anymore and wanted this to be over with. So they dropped us.
We had collision coverage. We had full coverage b/c it is required here when you are paying notes on a vehicle.

The other insurance is only responsible for the actual cash value of the vehicle, not your loan balance. If there is GAP insurance it should cover the difference b/w the ACV and the loan less late payments/fees.

The cop is right…you failed to yield. Just b/c you get a green arrow doesn’t give you the option to just go enter an intersection w/o yielding to other cars that may already be in the intersection. You have to look first prior to entering, and even if it’s clear, you still have a duty to maintain a proper lookout & take reasonable & prudent steps to avoid an accident, like honk, stop, etc. If I recall my Texas law correctly, it is a modified negligence state, which means if you are found 51% or more at fault for an accident you can not recover. If you’re under the 51% threshold, you recover up to your negligent free percentage. Your failure to yield may reduce your overall settlement, both for your property damage and your injury claim.

If you have insurance go through your own insurance company…that’s why you have it. Let the carriers hash it out b/w each other.

Automobile insurance and are they playing games with me?

July 16, 2010 - 6:40 pm 9 Comments

Okay confusing situation, my sister and I got into an accident yesterday, the car is on her insurance, (she has full coverage). It wasn’t until today that my neck started bothering me. So I am going to the doctor. I called her insurance company, they knew I was a passenger and they said that I needed to go to my insurance company because the PIP on my insurance would cover me in the accident (we are in Florida) I explained the problem with that is that I was actually in the car on the way to register my new car I just got yesterday and on my way to get insurance, and prior to that I did not have insurance. That my last car I just sold a week ago and it was still in my name but I dropped insurance because I was just waiting to receive a duplicate title in the mail so that I could sign it to the new buyer since I lost the original, but now she is telling me she doesn’t know if my sisters insurance will cover me even though I was in the car, how does this work in the state of Florida?

If your sister has insurance for medical bills of passengers in the car (which is generally part of the full coverage), they should cover it, even if you *do* have insurance.

Just push back and they will give. They always say no at first since most people won’t argue. If they don’t want to play, pull up the specks of your sister’s insurance and show them why they are wrong. If the accident was someone else’s fault, go talk to their insurance.

Is there an insurance company in california where I can get GAP insurance for an automobile loan?

July 16, 2010 - 6:40 pm 2 Comments

A phone number or a website would be great.

a true "gap" insurance should be obtained from the finance company for your vehicle, but some companies offer a similar coverage that may cover over a vehicle’s actual cash value in the event of a total loss.

why do insurance companies get away with charging hefty premiums but when it comes time to pay up, they don’t?

July 16, 2010 - 6:40 pm 4 Comments

they get legislators to approve these premiums and get them to make laws requiring automobile liability insurance, while selling this to the public vote as a decrease in premium because of more insureds, yet when an accident occurs, they raise the premium or drop you. what about the katrina victims that have been paying homeowners and/or flood insurance for 30+ years and now that it’s time for the insurance company to produce the service that we pay so dearly for, the consumer gets jacked! why are they allowed to get away with all of this when they are supposedly regualated by their state’s insurance commission?

They collect enough premium to cover any losses they EXPECT to have. When disasters like Katrina occur, they have to pay millions of dollars to cover the claims… they have to raise their prices because of their claims history. They will still continue to have their "normal" claims, but now they have millions in claims that never could have been predicted. Also, homeowners insurance does not cover floods, you have to have flood insurance which is sold separately. Not sure if a hurricane is covered under this situation, they can not be predicted enough in advance. If someone told you there was going to be a hurricane 3 years from now, you’d obviously buy the insurance.. but would you carry it for the whole 3 years, or just when you knew the hurricane was about to hit??
