Bankers Life and Casualty? Is it a good company to work for?

July 16, 2010 - 10:35 pm 3 Comments

I interviewed for a job with them yesterday, but I don’t have experience in selling insurance. From all aspects it sounds like a good company to work for, but my family thinks I would be making a huge mistake in going to work selling insurance since most insurance companies pay on commission. Recruiter said salary would be on an average of 45 to 50K the first year, with more incentives later on. Sounds too good to be true? My family thinks it’s a scam. Although I have over 20 years working retail management, it would be a great career change working with seniors since that is what the company caters to. Any advice?

Be VERY VERY careful. I worked there for about 8 months and things are not always as promised. You will cold call for hours on end, chase your tail with appointments that are people on medicade ect. Yes, with hard work you can make money but I could never see it as a long term sitiation. The tell tale sign is the high amount of turnover they have (no benefits and they can terminate your contract at any time if you are not selling enough.)

Insurance sales interview process?

July 16, 2010 - 10:35 pm 2 Comments

I have an interview on the 11th with Bankers Life and Casualty Company. When the assistant called to set up the interview it sounded like she was calling from a huge call center and then she proceeded to tell me that the first step to the interview process would be to come to a 2 hour meeting where other sales candidates would also be attending. I’m used to a one on one interview process this to me feels a little scammy a bit like multi-level marketing.

Is this how the interview process works with Insurance companies?

Many captive agencies that only deal with one brand of products operate like an MLM. Throw a bunch of crap at the wall and hope that something sticks. I would assume their training would be the same….talk to everyone with a heart beat and hope one of them bites on your gereral pitch line.

Many captive agencies, operate with the "burn ‘em and churn ‘em" theory…push them hard and let them sell piles of insurance in the first few months…then if they quit it’s no big deal, becuase the policies will stay on the books and the company will continue to make money, then just hire the next guy that knows a lot of people.

what is the null hypothesis and alternative hypothesis?

July 16, 2010 - 10:35 pm 2 Comments

The records of a casualty insurance company show that, in the past, its clients have had a mean of 1.9 auto accidents per day with a variance of .0036. The actuaries of the company claim that the variance of the number of accidents per day is no longer equal to .0036. Suppose that we want to carry out a hypothesis test to see if there is support for the actuaries’ claim.
What is the null hypothesis and the alternative hypothesis that we would use for this test.

H0: σ² = 0.0036 vs. H1: σ² ≠ 0.0036

Hypothesis Test for population variance

If we have a sample from an underlying normal distribution and variance σ² then we can test the null hypothesis:

H0: σ² = σ0²
for some fixed σ0².

If H0 is true then Χ² = (n – 1) S² / σ0². Where Χ² is the chi square with n – 1 degrees of freedom.

for the alternate hypothesis we have:

H1a: σ² > σ0²
H1b: σ² < σ0²
H1c: σ² ≠ σ0²

the test statistic is the same for all tests.

the rejection regions for the above tests are:
a) Χ² > Χ²α
b) Χ² < Χ²1-α
c) Χ² < Χ²α/2 or Χ² > Χ²1-α/2

where Χ²α is the value such that:
P(Χ² > Χ²α) = α where Χ² is the chi square with n – 1 degrees of freedom.

I have an interview, what are some good question to ask?

July 16, 2010 - 10:30 pm 2 Comments

I have an interview with Ohio Casualty Corporation which the hoilding company of The Ohio Casualty Insurance Company. I am applying for an accounting position and need to know some good questions to ask the interviewers to land the job.

Also what could be a good response to a question, if they ask me why i want to work for the company.

First of all, gather information about the company you are applying to. They may ask you for example what they do there. Of course you need to know that. You need to pay attention to you clothing and dress business appropriate. You need to speak clearly and listen to them as they are speaking to you. Appear interested and show them you want the job. You could do research on the company perhaps through their website. Consider how you learned of the job. Think about why you wanted to apply for it in the first place. Talk to people who work for the company if possible. Just don’t do that when you first go in. They could think you are an idiot. Be polite and ask questions to the interviewer. Tell them you want to know more about the company. It doesn’t hurt to ask. Who knows you may someday work for their competition and wouldn’t it be great to already know what they are all about. I am rambling but hope this helps.

Unsure about auto insurance law?

July 16, 2010 - 10:30 pm 1 Comment

I got a great quote (liability only) from an agent who went through the big auto insurance casualty company for my commercial vehicle. It’s almost too good. It is more than half the price of the next lowest quote I found.

The thing is that the next lowest quote came from the same auto insurance casualty company but through a different agent. And, I have gotten other quotes through several different agents through the same casualty company.

I called the big company directly and told them the situation. They told me that if he had the VIN of the vehicle then there could be no problem as far as classification of the type of commercial vehicle.

My major concern is that should there be an accident, and this lower priced insurance that I am paying was not accurately quoted by the agent, am I liable for damages? Are there clauses in the paperwork or contracts that protect me from this situation? Will I be obligated to pay the balance of what I was misquoted if an accident occurs?

you would not have to pay. it would be their fault.

Anybody know anything about insurance?

Yes, you run the risk of being responsible for back premium if there’s something not correct on your policy. Also be aware that a phone quote is not final, eventually you’d need to review the final details and paperwork and I’d wager that’s when you’ll see the error – and either have to say something at that time or sign off fraudulently on a legal contract.

Other than the VIN, verify the driver info (age, address, marital status, license #, record), employee info, mileage classification, liability LIMIT (is one agent quoting state minimums and the other $50,000 more coverage?) and if one is giving you a liability DEDUCTIBLE (uncommon but not unheard of, especially on commercial policies.)

All things being equal, quotes should not be drastically different within the same company for the same coverage, period, so something is awry.
