Are there any home-owners insurance companies left for new home owners in south Florida?

July 17, 2010 - 1:33 pm 3 Comments

every company we’ve checked with says they are no longer insuring homes in south florida.

There are 475 home owner insurance firms in Florida ( http://www.fldfs.com/Data/CompanySearch/index.asp ). If you are having difficulty find one providing coverage in your area, I would recommend contacting the Florida Department of Financial Services (which oversees the companies) toll-free at 1-800-342-2762.

Hope this helps!

Looking at changing auto/home insurance companies?

July 17, 2010 - 1:33 pm 6 Comments

I’ve had Allstate for more than 5 years for home and auto. The rates have continually gone up. I just contacted Liberty Mutual. They can save me over $500 per year with the same or better coverage. Any opinions, thoughts or advice?

I think the pricing is important, but having an agent you trust and is readily available is JUST as important. So, would I change for $500, to Liberty Mutual? IF I liked the agent, AND there wasn’t a coverage reduction, yes.

I wouldn’t give up coverage or loss free discounts for it, though.

My personal preference is an Independent Agent, though, not a captive – you’re going from one captive to another. You don’t get much selection with a captive agent. So I’d get a THIRD quote from an independent – see if Travelers can beat both of ‘em.

I took home insurance with an insurance broker who then deals with various insurance companies.?

Is this a good idea? I had only one claim in more than 10 years and I am having trouble. Should I change and get my insurance directly from the company of my choice?

I would when you have a problem and you use a broker its really hard to talk to someone..they tend to pass you back and forth

Can anyone show me a list of insurance companies with a home office in downtown Chicago?

July 17, 2010 - 6:03 am 2 Comments

I’m looking for the major insurance companies in downtown Chicago (not branch offices either, their home office, and not in a suburb, it has to be downtown). They can do any type of insurance too: auto, health, life, disability, etc.

I don’t know of ANY that have a "HOME" office in Chicago. Sorry, you’ll have to get your yellow pages out, look up the companies, and go to each website to verify where their HOME office is.

Many of them will be out of the US.

Are there any companies that will give you a home owner’s insurance if you have any medical problems?

My sister and her husband have tried to get home owner’s insurance but were turned down. She said they were denied because her husband is a diabetic and she is considered obese because of her weight She may be overweight BUT not obese. They need the insurance in case of one of the other’s demise in the future that the home will be paid for. They are purchasing a triple-wide mobile home in North Carolina. Can you please give me the name(s) of insurance companies that will be able to give them home owner insurance in North Carolina.

Thank you all for your assistance in the aforementioned matter.

Ro (Henderson, NC)

First of all, they are not looking for Homeowners Insurance. That is insurance on the house to protect them against fire or other damage to the house. What they are looking for is mortgage life insurance which will pay off if one of them dies. Since they have health problems, the best bet would be to go through the company where they have the mortgage. It will probably be impossible to find a company that will insure them outside of the mortgage company itself. Try that and good luck.

How do auto/home insurance companies share information with each other?

ISO reports, CLUE reports, and SIU departments of all insurance companies communicate with each other.

Why do (home) insurance companies ask whether you have a dog?

July 17, 2010 - 5:28 am 3 Comments

Does this have to do with liability or security?
Please no guesses/rationalized answers.
Thanks to all particularly to Chetco and Roothy for providing the most complete answers from the insurer’s and insured’s perspectives, respectively.

Liability
They use different rates to insure different breeds, according to their own bite-stats studies and former claims..
If your company doesn’t do a home inspection, it is safest to always call your dog a medium sized mixed breed, because they have no stats on that, to make a quote..

Just shopping around for good home insurance. Currently have accepted offer for our first home, and want to get the best home insurance rates.

go to the yellow pages, under Insurance, homeowners, look for an Independent Insurance Agent, that represents many different companies… they work for you..you are their client, and they will research the market, and bring back the best value to you- any other ???..holler back at me—I am a retired Independent Insurance Broker for life and health insurance, and a retired CPA, CFP, LUTCF also…good luck to you !!

What do home insurance companies fear the most?

July 16, 2010 - 12:22 pm 2 Comments

I had a fire at my home and I don’t want these guys ripping me off. How do I protect myself at this point?

Honestly, they probably fear ignorant politicians – like the ones in Florida who drastically contributed to the Florida homeowners mess they have now.

They’re not going to rip you off.

The first way to "protect" yourself, is by hiring a public adjuster. They work by getting 30% of your total payout, so if you hire one right away, you’re automatically going to get only 2/3 of what the insurance company pays out.

It’s too early – give the insurance company a chance to do their thing. Go to your agent, for FREE assistance, if you need it. Only if you get stonewalled, do you need that public adjuster or an attorney, who will likely take 40% of your payout.
