When health insurance companies deny claims?

July 17, 2010 - 1:11 am 11 Comments

It is standard practice to stall certain claims in order to bide time. Hoping that people will either die or get tired of fighting the appeals.

Isn’t this the true meaning of "Death Panels?"

Death Drugs Cause Uproar in Oregon

The news from Barbara Wagner’s doctor was bad, but the rejection letter from her insurance company was crushing.

Barbara Wagner
(Paul Carter/Register-Guard)The 64-year-old Oregon woman, whose lung cancer had been in remission, learned the disease had returned and would likely kill her. Her last hope was a $4,000-a-month drug that her doctor prescribed for her, but the insurance company refused to pay.

What the Oregon Health Plan did agree to cover, however, were drugs for a physician-assisted death. Those drugs would cost about $50.

"It was horrible," Wagner told ABCNews.com. "I got a letter in the mail that basically said if you want to take the pills, we will help you get that from the doctor and we will stand there and watch you die. But we won’t give you the medication to live."

So Medicare currently denies more claims than private insurance companies?

July 17, 2010 - 1:11 am 7 Comments

Don’t ask me for a link; I heard this on the radio and I’m asking if anybody has any concrete numbers about this one way or the other.

Yes, it is 100% true. Medicare is an insurance company that is run by the Federal Government.

They do deny more claims and anyone! Also the VA, another government run institution denies claims to a very high number of people. I have forgotten the exact numbers and cannot find he link at the moment. I was denied by the VA, but eventually got my claims taken care of. I work with a veteran that took over 30 years to get his claim settled.

While my wife was taking chemo another lady on Medicare was taking it. My wife is alive today because of her treatment. The other lady is not.

How do insurance companies deal with massive claims after something like the Newcastle storm disaster?

July 17, 2010 - 1:06 am 8 Comments

Will they be able to pay everyone at once? Do they even have enough money to give all the affected people?

Insurance companies are required to have an certain amount of money in reserves to pay for expected claims. However, they usually don’t have enough in these reserves to pay out for major unexpected disasters. In this case they have re-insurance. Re-insurance is an insurance policy that insurance companies buy that will cover them for high payouts. So yes, they will have enough between the reserves and the re-insurance to pay all affected people

Do Health insurance companies raise premiums based on how many claims you file or doctor visits you make?

July 17, 2010 - 1:06 am 2 Comments

Is a health insurance company aloud to raise your premiums based on how many times you visit a doctor or how many times you file claims with them and make them pay benefits? Or like if your diagnosed with a serious condition? Or are they only aloud to raise premiums based on your age?

In NJ rates are based on demographics, age, and gender. In NY rates are community rated and can only increase with the trend. That is for group insurance for small business. Rates for large groups are experience rated. I don’t know what state you are in so I can’t tell you for sure.

What will it take for insurance companies to recognize autism as a neurological condition?

July 17, 2010 - 1:06 am 3 Comments

Insurance companies often treat autism as if it was a psychological condition to avoid paying insurance claims. My daughter needed general anesthesia to have a cavity treated by the dentist. The insurance company denied the claim stating: "General Anesthesia is not a treatment for autism". We appealed the claim and lost… :-(

This is insurance for you. My son had a bunch done a couple of years ago. Of course he gets medicaid so no problem just jumping through hoops. I would get the dentist on your case with the insurance. Find some proof that it is less stressful with the general. I know it is for the person doing the job. That is why they will more than likely be willing to help you. As far as seeing it as a nuerological condition don’t hold your breath on that one. They still don’t know what causes it, or even why some children with autism can communicate. If you live in a metro or bigger area I would find some local people that have also been through this. Wishing you both best of luck. A….

Why do the Republicans support the Insurance companies denying valid claims just for increased profits?

July 17, 2010 - 1:02 am 11 Comments

The republicans received 155.5 million last year in campaign contributions from the Insurance lobbyists. Shhh, that’s why they are against health reform. Don’t let it get out. That’s why they lied about death squads and popping off grandma. The republicans like to spread fear when it comes to money.

Which insurance company claims disk prolapse operation?

July 17, 2010 - 1:02 am 2 Comments

I am planning to take a health insurance policy for my parents. I also want to know which insurance company will claim the disk prolapse operation? Because my dad is suffering from disk back pain. I’d like to take such a plan. I am from pune. Working in software industry. My company is not providing for total family, but providing for me.

If you do buy a private plan, you father would most likely have to wait out a pre-existing clause exemption. This means he may have to wait a year or two before any surgery, or any medical care related to his back for that matter, would be covered. However, since you are not protected by the statutes of a group policy (those policies offered by an employer are often much more liberal), there is a possibility that anything ever related to his back would NOT be covered. This prevents people from buying insurance just to get covered for an expensive procedure and then ditching the coverage afterwards.

Aside from that, just about any major medical plan will cover back surgery, but for how much and under what limitations are going to depend on the personal provisions you elect to pay for in the policy. For someone with a known medical condition, I’d expect to pay well over $1,000 a month (probably close to 2) for his coverage on a good, private policy, and then have to wait a year or two to wait out any pre-existing clauses.

How do homeowner’s insurance companies know if people lie on claims?

July 17, 2010 - 1:02 am 5 Comments

If a person filed a claim for theft, burglary, or anything of the sort, how do the insurance companies know if they’re lying or not? Even if people provide receipts or pictures, do they go through a process to make sure that the item was purchased by that person? You also have the right to black out any personal information, that way your credit card information will be secure. So what do insurance companies have to work with? If someone’s crafty enough, they can forge receipts, take fake pictures, or find some way to obtain owner’s manuals to provide fake proof.

There are red flags that tell us something is wrong.
But I’m not going to tell you what they are.
Sorry, no lessons from me on how to commit insurance fraud.

Also – you do have to file a police report — if its a fake claim….along with insurance fraud you can get charged with filing a false police report. That in itself is a felony. Insurance fraud is also a felony. And states are becoming more aggressive about prosecuting it.

Insurance fraud is not a victim less crime. Every time someone commits it — they might as well take your wallet out of your purse – open it and steal your money. It’s the same thing. Insurance companies are business. So, just like the grocery store that raises prices because of theft…..insurance companies raise prices to cover theft. You, your friends, your family all pay higher premium because of crooks.
