How will a 30+ day lapse in insurance coverage affect switching insurance companies.?

July 17, 2010 - 5:12 pm 2 Comments

I was with State Farm and they suddently raised my insurance from 87 dollars (this is liability and renter’s insurance) to $117 to 200+. I was never able to pay that amount at once seeing as I am a student with a part time job.

I have recently been looking for a new insurance company and notice they are asking about lapses in coverage. I have not had car insurance (and not been able to drive)since December 10th. How will this affect my next insurance rates.

With most preferred companies, one of the requirements to qualify for the "better" rates is that you have carried previous insurance continuously for a certain amount of time. This varies by company and can be anywhere from 1 to 5 years. Some companies will allow a lapse of up to 30 days or so and still be able to qualify for preferred rates while others will not.

The previous insurance requirement serves a couple of purposes:

It demonstrates responsibility and maturity on your part. People that carry continuous insurance are generally better risks for insurance companies.

It also provides a verifiable driving record. When you have insurance, if you have claims there will be records of those claims. This enables the insurance company to better underwrite the risk and charge the appropriate rate.

So by now you probably realize the importance of keeping your insurance coverage current. You should attempt to reinstate your policy or obtain new coverage soon before you see a big jump in rates.

Good luck!

How does the car insurance company ESURE rate if you have to make a claim?

July 17, 2010 - 5:11 pm 1 Comment

There are a lot of on line reviews of ESURE, the following is typical:

Like many people I like value for money, so when I had to renew my car insurance I shopped around.

ESure were the cheapest by far and as they were not some small here today gone tomorrow company, that’s who I chose.

If that were the end of the story I would be recommending them highly. The entire process from quote to certificate arriving in the post was wonderful. So wonderful and cheap that I recommended them to my parents. Both of whom had cars.

Again the process was easy, the quote cheap and the staff helpful.

A couple of months after taking out the policy my mother was unfortunate enough to have her car stolen. It was parked outside her house and securely locked.

Esure couldn’t have been less interested. They did complete the claim process eventually, but they then refuse to insure her on any policy other than the one she had claimed on. She was at the time a named driver on my fathers car. This was revoked and she was made to feel a criminal for having been a victim of someone elses crime.

Despite having protected no claims discount she was unable to be insured with esure again.

I can not in any way recommend a company who treat their customers in this way.

Does my insurance rate go up for next year?

July 17, 2010 - 5:11 pm 5 Comments

I got a citation for an infraction recently. I was sober and I drove my friend back onto campus. There were two stop signs at night and I did not see any lights so I thought no car was there and I passed right through the stop signs. When I parked a police officer came by and wrote me a citation so now I have to show up to court. I was wondering if my insurance rate goes up for this and if so, by how much? My insurance company is AAA.

It probably go up. I was with AAA a few years back and switched about 3 times since and each time it was because I found a cheaper quote, so if you are concerned about saving you should do some legwork.
This is where I got my last insurance from:

I just got my ifsac firefighter 1 certication can I ask for a lower insurance rate where I live?

July 17, 2010 - 5:07 pm 1 Comment

I live in a commercial dormitory where there are no firefighters. Should I ask to lower the insurance rate because I live there? It seems that with my skills I am at a lower risk. It seems as if my training would reduce the risks of fire and being sued for medical causes, how should I approach our insurance company about this?

Unfortunately no. Insurance rates are based on ISO ratings of a fire department. Where ever your local fire department is located and based on response times, equipment, water supply and other things, the ISO (Insurance Services Office) gives the fire department a rating between 10, being the worst, to 1, being the best.

Since you’re only one person with no fire fighting equipment, you aren’t going to be able to do much by yourself in the event of an emergency. An insurance company won’t even look at you even though you’re certified. Sorry.

Do any insurance companies offer discounted rate for hybrid or "green" cars?

The Farmers Insurance company does.

Is it true that your auto insurance company considers the color of your vehicle when determining rate?

July 17, 2010 - 5:06 pm 7 Comments

I am buying a new car, and I’ve heard that your insurance rates may go up or down depending on the color of your car. I’ve heard that a red car has higher insurance rates, while white cars are the lowest. Is that true?

Not true, massive myth.

Insurance companies don’t care what color your car is.

Getting a Permit in TX increases insurance rate?

July 17, 2010 - 5:02 pm 1 Comment

hi. is anyone here from texas? i just want to know if insurance companies in TX really do increase your insurance rate once they are notified that your son or daughter has a permit to drive. AS if living here isnt already hard enough, lets top it off with this surprise.

They only increase your rate if you put your son or daughter on the policy. If they are driving then they have to have insurance….that’s the law in TX.

What are the most Top rated pet insurance companies?

July 17, 2010 - 5:02 pm 3 Comments

I looked up VPI but i’m not sure if it’s the best one to pick.

VPI is the oldest which is why you hear about them a lot, but it doesn’t necessarily mean they are the best. In fact, they seem to get the most complaints (ripoffreport.com and search for pet insurance).

You should look at review sites like http://www.petinsurancereview.com which has user ratings on the companies.

Personally, I have Trupanion and I like them a lot. They have gotten great reviews because they have good customer service. I chose them because they cover 90% of all the medical bills, and because they don’t have annual limits so if your pet has a horrible year, it will all be covered.
