Can insurance companies find out if you are married even if you didn’t change your name?

July 19, 2010 - 12:41 am 7 Comments

I just want to know if I got married and kept my maiden name and I still currently live with my parents, will the car insurance company know I’m married without me actually telling them? do they have ways of finding that stuff out? the only reason I’m asking is cause I’m currently on my dad’s insurance (only car though, not his health insurance). and I don’t want my parents to know I’m married quite yet (for reasons that aren’t really important to this question). but I’m gonna be finding my own car insurance soon but I just wanted to know in the meantime will they find out and tell my dad?

It really doesn’t matter if they find out or not. Like others have said, they cannot give out information about you, so even if they find out, that doesn’t mean they’ll tell your parents.

Secondly, its ok to be married and still be on your parents’ auto insurance policy. Also, getting married lowers your rates, so its not like the insurance company will be dying to give you a discount.

can insurance companies find out about preexisting conditions diagnosed when you were uninsured?

Yes. They can review your medical history. I saw that people here mentioned the Medical Information Bureau (MIB, but not the movie). This is a non-profit organization that acts as an intermediary between insurers and the insured. They do NOT get medical records from your doctor or hospital, and most people don’t actually have a MIB file. The answerers here are right that you shouldn’t lie because that is a form of fraud. A group health plan, such as one you can enroll in through work, cannot deny you coverage based on a pre-existing condition, but they can force you to wait during an exclusionary period before covering your condition. If you can’t get on with a group health plan, check out MostChoice.com. You can research and compare local health insurance plans and speak to multiple local insurance agents. Tell them about your condition and wait until one of the agents returns with the plan that’s perfect for you.

I need to find an insurance company?

July 18, 2010 - 10:41 pm 4 Comments

I need to find Insurance that is affordable and covers Pre exisiting injuries, maternity coverage, and dental care. Anyone know a company that does that?

Yep, welfare health insurance.

That’s it.

No "real" insurance company could stay in business, if you could wait until AFTER stuff went wrong before you bought the coverage. No one buys maternity unless they want to use it, so it’s basically prepaid, with long waiting periods.

And, for the record- dental is a different policy than health.

How does a insurance company find all of your records?

When I applied for insurance I wasn’t able to find all of the doctors I have been to in the past. Will my insurance company find out about them? I didn’t lie but I just don’t know if I put all of them. Is there like a database that pulls up every doctor you have ever been too in your life?

Will my insurance company find out that I crashed my work vehicle?

July 18, 2010 - 6:29 pm 4 Comments

I crashed my work vehicle into another car. I have the option to pay cash, but my employer has now let me go.

Whose insurance will pay for the accident? Mine or my employers? Will my auto-insurance find out and jack my rate up?

You can compare how the insurance quotes would change, for example here – autoinsurance.bebto.com

Why do Republicans find it essential for insurance companies to continue to make huge profits from illness?

July 18, 2010 - 3:41 am 14 Comments

What is really wrong with a single payer system that covers everyone and drops no one no matter how sick they become?

I think it’s unfair to say the insurance companies are profiting from illness, as they drop the coverage of the people who are actually ill. It would be more accurate to say they are profiting from wellness since people are only covered if they don’t get sick.

How do insurance companies (such as AFLAC) find out about pre existing conditions?

July 18, 2010 - 2:44 am 2 Comments

How do insurance companies discover pre existing conditions? Do you just have to wait the waiting peirod (usually 6 months) to be allowed to file a claim or will any chronic illness be exempted for life if it was diagnosed prior to joining the plan?

Due to HIPAA (health insurance portability and assurance act) insurances can access health information. I do believe in order to do this than they need a patient release form from you signed. They’re a business so they want to make sure they make money. I would research the companies and their policies before signing on…

How do I find out what discounts hospitals offer insurance companies?

July 17, 2010 - 10:42 pm 4 Comments

Mom had an emergency surgery four months ago plus three set backs. Needs another major surgery to finish the first procedure once she is healthy enough. She is under 60 so does not qualify for medicare or medicaid. Applied for disability but that will take at least 3 mos to process, and if approved still won’t be enough to meet the $3300/mo payment plan. Current monthly income is $911.00 from dad’s social security. House is paid for but cannot get a reverse mortgage (too young) or a home equity loan (income too low). Parents have cashed in their IRAs and stocks (losing 40% in fees, penalties and taxes). NOTHING is left. About to be turned over to collection tho they’ve always had the best credit rating. Hospital has offered a 25% discount if they could pay the entire initial bill, but there wasn’t enough stock/IRA money to cover even that.

Can we get the bill down to what an insurance company would pay for the same services? How do I find out what are "customary and reasonable fees"?

You’re not likely to find out exact contracted rates. Hospitals don’t even have the same rates across all insurers. (And they have some incentive to keep those rates somewhat secret – don’t want to let Insurer A know that you’re giving Insurer B a better rate, otherwise Insurer A will be knocking on your door to renegotiate.)

When I worked in a contracting department, we’d try to ballpark the rates that other insurers were getting by using EOBs that we had access to.

This strategy might work for you – if you know others who have used services at this hospital and who will let you see their EOBs, you can compare the billed charges to the insurance allowed amount to get an idea of what kind of discount the hospital is giving to insurers. It won’t be scientific or exact, but at least it will get you in the ballpark.
