Can my car insurance company claim money back a year after I cancelled my policy?

I was with Endsleigh Insurance up until February last year. When my policy ended they sent me a cheque for £120 claiming it was some kind of refund. Obviously I took the money and spent it. A year down the line, they’ve written me a letter saying they gave me the cheque by mistake and want their money back.
Can they do this? It all seems a bit fishy to me.

No, they cannot do this. They may have made an error but you accepted it in good faith.
Their mistake I am afraid. All they can legally do is to ask you.You are not obliged to pay it back.
