Police refuses to release documents needed for life insurance claim?
July 17, 2010 - 2:47 am
What legal action can I take if the police refuses to release a Post Mortem report and Police Statement (of what happened) that I need for a life insurance claim? The insurance company refuses to pay out unless they get these 2 documents! We’re talking millions of dollars here.
Many departments will not release information unless a FOIL
( Freedom of Information Law ) is submitted. Ask them what the procedure is.

Get an attorney, who can tell you whether they have to and if so what to do to get them.

if they suspect the death to be suspicious they will hold off until they complete their investigation. that could take weeks or months.
and if the death is under suspicion, the life insurance will be slow to pay also.
good luck

The question is WHY are they refusing to release them. Sounds to me like an investigation is still in progress.

The LIFE insurance company can request these documents, and get them, from the police.
