Equine Liability Insurance?

July 17, 2010 - 4:12 am 7 Comments

Do any of you have experience with Equine Liability Insurance companies? I think I need to get some insurance but don’t know how to pick a company. I was hoping some of you had some experience with a company and could recommend ones to use or avoid. Also, any general comments about liability insurance would be appreciated as well. I have two quarter horses and board them on my property.
Thanks for the responses so far. I live in California and the law does not exclude liability for horses like in almost every other state.

The problem is that nowadays there are only 4 underwriters who will do this type of insurance. There are a million agents who can get you a quote, but they all go to the same 4 or 5 companies who actually underwrite it. (I had the same thing happen with my professional liability, didn’t know that until I tried to get it.)

Your best bet is to contact 4 or 6 insurance agents and have them get you some quotes, the difference in the price will be a reflection of their percentage (or greed, depending on how you look at it.) Almost all the coverages offered will be identical.

Also, before you shell out any money, there are so many exceptions that put the blame for any incident squarely on you anyway, I’d really read that policy before shelling out any hard earned cash. If there’s any way they can weasel out of actually paying a claim, they’re going to do it.

I haven’t had to buy it yet so I’m not that familiar with companies, but I know that if you are an instructor and are certified (through CHA for sure, probably others as well) it cuts your rates down pretty significantly.

Yes, I have a horse carriage company and am required to carry full liability insurance. I don’t know what state that you are in, as that makes a difference who can write policies in your particular state. If you would care to personally email me (my email is open) I will tell you my company’s name and names of others as well and how to find what you need. In most states, if you post the state law "If you willingly participate in equine activities, etc etc etc…………) you actually are pretty protected unless there is negligence which can be proven…If and when I hear from you via email, I will share some more information with you. I am not trying to be secretive, there just isn’t room to share here the information that you need.

We have equine liability on our Home Owners insurance.
We re-insured our home and property with another insurance agency that DID provide Equine Liability.
Our Agent is Larry Viegas Insurance Service he is in Roseville, Ca. (near Sacramento), he found an insurance Company (American Bankers Insurance Company in Pasadena Ca.) that specializes in this. We have 14 horses, board outside mares, and I give riding lessons and this policy also covers anyone on our property that may be injured by our horses. (I do require them to sign a release of Liability) if they are riding any of our horses.
Our Agent is very familiar with all types of Equine insurance, we started using him for our personal insurance because we belong to several Equine Clubs that use him for their Insurance when putting on events. He is very knowledgeable, regarding any questions you might have.
I hope this will be of some help to you.
